Catherine Zeta Jones est née le 25 septembre 1969 à Swansea au pays de Galles. Sa mère est d'origine irlandaise et son père, gallois est directeur d'une usine de bonbons. Très jeune elle devient une bonne chanteuse et une danseuse confirmée notamment grâce à son engagement dans une troupe locale.

Elle commence très jeune sa carrière puisqu'à 11 ans, elle est engagée dans une production d'Annie et peu de temps après, participe à Bugsy Malone où elle joue le rôle de Talullah. Trois ans après, elle passe une audition et est repérée par un producteur qui l'engage pour jouer dans Pajama Game.

À quinze ans, elle décide qu'il est temps de lancer sa carrière et de partir tenter sa chance à Londres. Elle met deux ans avant d'obtenir un rôle dans une comédie musicale, 42nd street. Elle est d'abord engagée dans le chœur, puis, l'actrice qui devait jouer le premier rôle tombe malade et Catherine Zeta Jones se fait suffisamment remarquer par son talent et son physique avantageux pour être choisi pour la remplacer. La comédie rencontre un grand succès et Catherine Zeta Jones enchaîne sept show par semaine.

Après ce succès, elle décide de prendre une année sabbatique et d'en profiter pour visiter la France. Elle y rencontre Philippe De Broca qui l'engage pour jouer le rôle Sheherazade dans Les 1001 nuits (1990).

Elle retourne en Angleterre en 1991 et est engagée dans une série télévisée The Darling Buds of May pour interpréter la fille aînée d'une famille de fermiers du Yorkshire. La série est un énorme succès et Catherine Zeta Jones devient une star en Angleterre. La série va durer trois ans et l'actrice devient la cible favorite des tabloïds anglais, connus pour leur acharnement. Pendant ces trois années, elle fait ses premiers pas à Hollywood en décrochant de petits rôles dans des séries télévisées comme The young Indiana Jones Chronicles ou encore Christopher ColumbusThe discovery. Elle rencontre le producteur américain Jon Peter qui tombe amoureux d'elle et voudrait l'épouser. Elle souhaite garder son indépendance et poursuivre sa carrière, elle refuse donc. Elle annonce son retour au théâtre dans une production londonienne : Street scenes.

La pression des tabloïds et des paparazzi est telle qu'elle décide de quitter définitivement l'Angleterre pour vivre aux États-Unis et y faire carrière. Mais les portes du cinéma sont dures à franchir et elle doit se rabattre sur la télévision qui lui offre des rôles dans diverses séries. En 1994, elle joue dans la série Retour of Native puis en 1995, dans Catherine the Great. En 1996 obtint le rôle de Kate Winslet dans la mini-série Titanic. Elle est alors remarquée par Steven Spielberg qui la recommande pour le film The Mask of Zorro (1998) qui sera réalisé par Martin Campbell. Au côté d'Antonio Banderas, elle fait sensation et sa carrière semble alors s'emballer. L'année suivante, elle tourne dans un thriller romantique de Jon Amiel au côté de Sean Connery, Entrapment, ainsi que dans The Haunting de Jan de Bont avec Liam Neeson et Lili Taylor. L'année 2000 est tout aussi chargée pour l'actrice puisqu'elle a été choisie par Stephen Frears pour tourner dans une comédie romantique, High Fidelity, et qu'elle a également tourné pour David Soderbergh dans Traffic.

Dans ce dernier film, elle retrouve Michael Douglas, son compagnon à la ville. Catherine Zeta Jones attend leur premier enfant pour les mois qui viennent.
